In August of 2019, Ekam Austin was founded by five high school students with the mission to improve healthcare in rural communities by working with Ekam USA. Our organization raises crucial funds that help purchase NICU equipment in underfunded and under supplied hospitals in India. We strive to support these communities in every way that we can as we work to achieve Ekam’s goal of reducing infant and maternal mortality rates.

In our first year, through multiple community fundraisers, we raised over $3,000 to purchase NICU equipment for villages in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. We supported the Neonatal Care Units in both the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and the Tirunelveli Government Head Quarters Hospital. These funds purchased medical devices such as pulse oximeters (to measure oxygen saturation levels for sick newborn babies) and neonatal ventilators.

    COVID-19 Care Kits

Over the course of a few months, our team put together over 100 COVID-19 Care Kits. Each Care Kit contained two masks, one water bottle, a travel-sized hand sanitizer, and a granola bar. More than 50 kits were donated to the Trinity Center, a local Austin organization which hosts various programs for the homeless and the ARCH (Austin Resource Center for the Homeless). We also donated an additional 50 kits to Easterseals.

Belmont Senior Living Pen Pal Letters

Our team wrote over 100 letters to residents at the Belmont Village, a local senior living care facility. These letters, filled with positive messages, aimed to brighten up the residents’ days and hopefully alleviate the loneliness exacerbated by visitor restrictions. We even had some residents respond to our letters allowing us to continue writing to them!
