Thalassemia and other blood incompatibility conditions in pregnant women result in severe disease and death of newborn babies. Such diseases result in lifelong need for monthly blood transfusions for the babies, or bone marrow transplant, which the parents cannot afford. Blood transfusions are a temporary fix and cause long term iron overload issues.
Proper testing at the time of birth will help doctors to diagnose and treat these conditions to save the babies.
Due to limited resources, currently public hospitals in India are not able to keep up with the need. Monthly about 150 mothers, 50 of them in emergency condition, as well as about 50 children monthly, including 15 emergencies, need reagents for testing. Ekam USA is committed to providing such needs to reinforce the public health system, bridge the gaps in healthcare and save the lives of children and mothers. Our support makes Govt. spending in health care more cost effective, by providing timely care to these mothers and children.
Ekam USA is run by volunteers hence we are able to send most of your donation to the project, with <3% administrative cost.
